People ask me this all the time. Sometimes out of genuine curiosity, sometimes with a slight smile, as if hiring a private sommelier were something reserved for Michelin-starred dinners or grand estates. Let me tell you what it actually means, and why it’s probably more accessible, and more memorable, than you think.

What does a private sommelier actually do?
A private sommelier is a wine expert you hire directly, not through a restaurant, not through a tour operator, to create an experience built entirely around you. Your group, your tastes, your occasion.
It’s not a lecture. It’s not a château tour with forty strangers and a scripted speech. It’s a session designed for you, starting from what you enjoy, what you’re celebrating, and what you want to discover.
In my case, every experience starts with a conversation. You tell me about the occasion, the atmosphere you have in mind, what you love, or don’t, about wine. From there, I build everything: the wine selection, the format, and the story we’ll tell together over each glass.

What can a private sommelier offer you?
Here’s what I actually do, in concrete terms:
Wine selection. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône Valley, international wines, aged vintages, natural wines – I choose every bottle based on your profile, your budget, and what we want to explore. Not keen on heavy tannins? Want to focus on food pairings? Everything adapts.
Hosting the experience. I come to you – at your home, a friend’s place, a private venue, our family estate Château Vieux Mougnac, or on the Bassin d’Arcachon. I also travel to Paris and other major French cities, with trusted partners on the ground when needed. From London, it’s just a two-hour flight to Bordeaux.
The session itself. A journey through Bordeaux appellations, an initiation to the fundamentals of wine, a food and wine pairing session, each format is a different gateway into the world of wine. You choose yours.
The story. That’s what turns a tasting into a memory. One client once reached out to celebrate his wife’s 60th birthday. When I learned they’d got married in Burgundy and had just settled in Bordeaux, we designed a Burgundy vs Bordeaux blind tasting around their story. That’s what a private sommelier does.

Who is it for?
The honest answer: everyone. But here are the occasions where it really comes into its own.
Individuals and couples who want to give or experience something genuinely original. A birthday, a special trip, a dinner party that stands out, or a gift for someone who already has everything. A private sommelier is an experience, not an object.
Families and groups celebrating a milestone. Anniversaries, reunions, weddings, wine has always been at the heart of great occasions. It deserves to be treated that way.
Corporate clients looking for a different kind of event. Team building, client entertainment, end-of-year celebrations – a wine session hosted by a sommelier creates conversation, connection, and lasting memories. I work with Rothschild Private Bank and Artemis, among others.
Travellers visiting Bordeaux who want more than a château visit. Whether you’re coming from London, Toronto, New York or Sydney, a private sommelier gives you access to Bordeaux wine in a way no group tour can.

Why Bordeaux?
I’m an oenologist, a winemaker at Château Vieux Mougnac, a member of the tasting panel of the Revue des Vins de France, and a regular contributor on French national radio and television. I’m not telling you this to impress you. I’m telling you because when I talk about Bordeaux wine, I don’t do it from a textbook. I live it.
Bordeaux is the world’s largest fine wine region: over 60 appellations, thousands of estates, and a winemaking tradition that spans centuries. Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Margaux, Pessac-Léognan: each tells a different story. And there’s no better way to discover it than with someone who knows it from the inside.
That’s what I built L.O Wine around. With one simple idea: Drink Different.
